Asperger's Syndrome/Autism Spectrum (ASD)
Asperger's is part of the autism spectrum and associated with particular ways of processing information and communicating. Although there is considerable variation among individuals with ASD, the following strengths are common: good attention to detail, strong sense of social justice, good pattern recognition skills, logic, and expertise in areas of interest. People with an ASD may have difficulties in some of the following areas: sensory processing, social expression, emotion regulation, and organization. If you or a loved one has (or suspects) Asperger's, I will work with you to reach your potential by drawing on your strengths and compensating for shortcomings.
As a fully-licensed clinical psychology who specializes in working with older adolescents and adults with Asperger's syndrome, I may be able to assist in the following ways:
1. Psychotherapy for co-existing conditions such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. I am experienced in adapting cognitive-behavioral techniques to the context of living with an ASD.
2. Individual coaching of social skills. People with an ASD often find themselves misunderstood by others or isolated. I can help you overcome barriers to forming meaningful relationships.
3. Counseling on sexuality-related issues in a safe, confidential, and supportive environment.
4. Counseling on autistic burnout. Adults with an ASD may experience a sustained drop in functioning due to an accumulation of stress without appropriate support. I can identify autistic burnout and provide support for recovery.
